BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단, short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, also promoted internationally under the backronym "Beyond the Scene") is a seven-member South Korean boy group formed and managed by Big Hit Entertainment, now operating as BigHit Music under the HYBE umbrella. Since debuting in 2013, the group has grown from a mid-tier hip-hop act into one of the most commercially successful music groups in the world, known for self-producing much of their material and for lyrics that deal openly with mental health, youth pressure, and self-acceptance.

History

Formation and early years

BTS was formed under Big Hit Entertainment, a label that, at the time of the group's debut, was considerably smaller than the major Korean entertainment companies. The group's earliest concept leaned heavily on hip-hop, with the members — several of whom had backgrounds as underground rappers or dancers — writing and contributing to their own tracks far more than was typical for debut idol groups at the time.

Breakthrough

Through the mid-2010s, BTS built a following gradually rather than through one single breakout hit, relying on a strong online presence, frequent behind-the-scenes content, and direct engagement with fans through social media. By the "Love Yourself" era in 2017–2018, the group had crossed over into mainstream recognition in the United States and other Western markets, an unusual path for a Korean act at that point.

Global superstardom

From 2018 onward, BTS became a fixture on major global charts. They were the first Korean act to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, first with the all-English single "Dynamite," and followed that with further chart-topping releases such as "Butter" and "Life Goes On." The group also received multiple Grammy Award nominations, a first for a K-pop act, and performed at high-profile international events, including addressing the United Nations General Assembly.

Military service and reunion

Under South Korean law, able-bodied male citizens are required to complete mandatory military service. Members of BTS enlisted in stages beginning in the early 2020s, with the group pausing full unit promotions during this period while pursuing solo projects individually. By mid-2025, all seven members had completed their service obligations, and the group began preparing for renewed group activities and new music together.

Concerts and tours

BTS has held multiple stadium-scale world tours across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East, regularly selling out major venues within minutes of ticket sales opening. Their concerts are known for blending elaborate stage production with moments of direct, informal interaction with the audience.

Awards and recognition

The group has received numerous domestic and international awards, including multiple wins at major Korean music award shows, Billboard Music Awards, American Music Awards, and repeated Grammy Award nominations. They are frequently cited as one of the best-selling music acts of the 2010s and 2020s.

Trivia

  • The name "BTS" originally stood for "Bangtan Sonyeondan," loosely translating to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts," later given the English meaning "Beyond the Scene."
  • BTS retained an unusually large share of ownership over their own music and choreography, a factor often credited for their creative consistency.
  • The group's commercial success is widely seen as a major driver behind Big Hit Entertainment's growth into HYBE, now one of the largest entertainment companies in South Korea.
  • Despite promoting as a unified group, the members are known for distinct, contrasting personalities which fans often point to as part of the group's long-term appeal.
