SEVENTEEN (세븐틴) is a thirteen-member South Korean boy group under Pledis Entertainment, a subsidiary of HYBE. The group is unusual in the idol industry for the extent to which its members write, compose, and choreograph their own material — a practice that has given them a distinct creative identity.
History
Debut and early years
SEVENTEEN debuted in May 2015 after an extended pre-debut period during which members trained and released content publicly. Their early releases established the group's signature style: tight choreography performed synchronously across thirteen members, combined with pop and hip-hop production largely created in-house.
Rise to prominence
From the You Make My Day era onward, SEVENTEEN built an increasingly large international following. Albums such as Attacca and FML debuted at the top of Korean charts and placed strongly on international charts, with the group becoming one of the best-selling acts in Korea during the early 2020s.
Units
SEVENTEEN operates as three sub-units that promote both together and independently: the Hip-hop Unit (S.Coups, Wonwoo, Mingyu, Vernon), the Vocal Unit (Woozi, Jeonghan, Joshua, DK, Seungkwan), and the Performance Unit (Hoshi, Jun, The8, Dino).
