EXO is a South Korean boy group under SM Entertainment that debuted in April 2012, originally as two simultaneous sub-units — EXO-K (Korean) and EXO-M (Mandarin). The group became one of the best-selling music acts in South Korean history and a defining act of the third generation of K-pop.
History
Debut and early concept
EXO debuted with a science-fiction-themed concept, with each member assigned a fictional superpower. Their debut mini-album MAMA established the group's grandiose, performance-driven style. EXO-K promoted in Korean while EXO-M promoted the same material in Mandarin, targeting both markets simultaneously.
Commercial peak
From 2013 to 2017, EXO dominated Korean music award shows, winning Album of the Year at the Melon Music Awards for four consecutive years — a record at the time. Albums such as XOXO, Exodus, and The War became multi-million sellers. Singles "Growl," "Monster," and "Ko Ko Bop" achieved massive domestic chart success.
Member changes and continued activity
Several members departed over the years, including Chinese members Kris, Luhan, and Tao. Despite lineup changes, the group's core Korean members continued, and EXO has remained active with periodic group and sub-unit releases through the early 2020s while members complete military service obligations.
